One of my favourite dry flies for river and lake fishing, the Elk Hair Caddis is a great all around searching pattern. I always have a few on hand in different wing and body colour combinations .
HOOK:Streamer, Mustad or Tiemco 10-16
THREAD:Tan 6/0
BODY: Dubbing of choice
HACKLE: Ginger (palmered over body)
WING: Tan Elk Hair
Step 1: Prepare ginger hackle by stripping
off any webbed material from the base of the feather. Attach at the bend
of the hook with the concave (dull) side face you. This is important
as you will want the hackle to point forward as you wind it onto the
hook.
Step 2: Spin a small amount of dubbing around your tying thread and build
a small, cigar shaped body. Ensure that you stop within 1/4 of an inch
from the hook eye to allow for the elk hair wing.
Step
4: Cut the elk hair to the desired length so that no further trimming
is required. Place wing into position and make 2 loose wraps almost to
the point where the hair flares. Next, make another wrap and this time
apply tension ensuring the wing does not rotate around the hook. The
head of the fly should flare as will the body. Make 4-5 more wraps, solidly
securing the wing to the fly. Finally, whip finish and apply head cement.
