Zonker Bead-Head Leech

by Robin Pike

A slim version of the Bunny Leech. The weighted head and slim profile of the zonker bead-head make this fly move very similar to a leech. I prefer to fish this pattern through the water column to take advantage of the up and down movement the weighted head creates.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

HOOK:Streamer, Mustad or Tiemco 6-10
THREAD:Black 6/0
BODY: Peacock Black Ice Dub
WING: Black Rabbit Zonker
HEAD: Gold Bead, medium or large (1/8 to 5/32)

Tying Instructions for the Zonker Bead-Head Leech

Step 1: Debarb hook and slip the bead onto the hook (smallest opening first) up to the hook eye. Attach tying thread and run it down to the bend of the hook. Place zonker strip on hook as shown and bind down the material. Note, it is important that the fur is pointing towards the eye of the hook and that the strip is tied in inverted (fur side closest to the floor).

Step 2: Spin dubbing onto the thread and build up a small, even tapered body. Continue dubbing the body all the way up to 1/8 of an inch from the bead. Be sure to leave enough room at the head to secure the zonker strip.

Step 4: Re-attach tying thread in front of the bead, push the bead away from the hook eye and then secure the tag end of the zonker strip. Cut the remaining material and create a small neat head. Whip finish and apply head cement on both sides of the bead.
